La esclavitud todavía existe en la actualidad. En España, por ejemplo, el informe The 2018 Global Slavery Index, elaborado por la Fundación Free Walk en colaboración con la Organización Internacional de Trabajo, cifraba en más de 100.000 las personas esclavas en España, aunque las cifras del Ministerio del Interior la rebajan a más de 10.000. El código penal español encuadra el trabajo esclavo dentro del delito más amplio de trata de personas, en el artículo 177bis de nuestro Código Penal. No solo encontramos legislación contra la esclavitud moderna, sino que podemos encontrar otras normas nacionales e internacionales que nos indican cómo actuar ante este tipo de delito
